Going Dark

Look at the hype surrounding dark mode user interfaces. I love them but maybe that is due to my time on Bloomberg Terminals.



You know, those toggles that switch everything from white to black, supposedly making web browsing easier on the eyes.

So the question is, are they really better for you?

First, let's look at the science behind it. Studies have shown that blue light emitted from screens can negatively impact our sleep and circadian rhythm. And since dark mode uses less light and less blue light, it may indeed be easier on the eyes and make it easier to wind down before bed. Additionally, some users claim that dark mode reduces eye strain and helps with concentration.


But what about the downsides? For one, dark mode may affect readability and clarity, especially when it comes to text-heavy sites or older users. It can also make it difficult to see the difference between clicked and unclicked links. And as someone who spends a lot of time writing, I can tell you that it's easier to proofread text on a white background than a black one.
